WWOW 2020

Wonder Women of Wine (W.W.O.W.) is a non-profit organization (non-profit under state law, intending to apply for IRS tax exempt status) advocating gender equality in the wine industry. Our efforts are achieved through solution-based discussions, networking, and scholarship opportunities.

We empower women to adopt leadership roles in all facets of the wine industry, and advocate men to be equal voices for, and activators of, gender equality in wine in both professional and social settings. We foster mentorship between men and women alike in order to change the status quo.

Women represent 60% of wine buyers in the United States.

Women make up half the workforce, but account for only 5% of chief executives at the largest companies.

In 2015, female somms reported earning an average of $7150 less than somms that were male.

“Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It’s about making life more fair for women everywhere. It’s not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It’s about baking a new pie.

The Need

It’s time to close the gap between the percentage of women in the wine industry and the percentage of women wine professionals in leadership positions.

More than 50% of hospitality industry professionals are women, yet only occupy 23% of leadership positions in the industry are occupied by women.1

In 2016, 62% of all graduates from UC Davis Viticulture and Enology program were women,2 yet only 10% of winemakers in California are women.3

A mere 4% of wineries in California are owned by women.4

Currently women are responsible for 60% of wine purchases and 80% of wine consumption in the United States in a $34 billion industry.5
